Kumbh Mela
In Hinduism, the Kumbh Mela is a religious festival celebrated four times over the course of a year, with the site of observance rotating between four pilgrimage sites on four sacred rivers—Haridwar on the Ganges River, Ujjain on the Shipra, Nashik on the Godavari, and Prayag (modern Prayagraj) at the confluence of the Ganges, Jamuna, and mythical Sarasvati. Each site's celebration is based on a specific set of astrological positions for the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter, with the holiest time occurring when these positions are fully occupied. The Kumbh Mela at Prayag, in particular, draws millions of pilgrims. In addition, a Great Kumbh Mela festival is held in Prayag every 144 years, the most recent being in 2001. The Kumbh Mela is one of the world's largest festivals, lasting several weeks and attracting over 200 million people in 2019, including 50 million on its most auspicious day.
